The Class 5 Photonics GmbH, a joint spin-off of DESY and the Helmholtz Institute Jena which was founded in November 2014, develops very flexible femtosecond-lasers generating short pulses with high performance for science and industry. Those high performance lasers, which are based on the future enabling technology OPCPA, provide tuneable, femtosecond pulse duration, and high power (product of repetition rate times pulse energy), thereby making it possible to reduce experimental or industrial processing times by a factor of 10-100, compared to conventional titanium-sapphire technology.

Those systems, which were developed in the research group of Dr. Franz Tavella including Dr. Michael Schulz from DESY as well as Dr. Robert Riedel and Dr. Mark Prandolini from Helmholtz-Institut Jena, a branch of the GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung GmbH, consist of a special white light source with a patent pending and an optical parametrical laser amplifier and are able to provide pulse durations between 10 and 100 femtoseconds and output power ranging from one to 100 Watts. The prototype of this new high-performance laser, with a planned output power of 20 Watts, measures just 80 x 80 centimeters and thus is considerably more compact than existing systems.

To build up the Class 5 Photonics GmbH, the project was financed with almost 130 000 EUR by the Helmholtz Association's “Helmholtz Enterprise” support program over a period of one year. This funding included personal and material costs as well as management support given from external consultants.

The Helmholtz Enterprise program combined with the assistance and support of the DESY Start-up Office under the leadership of the DESY Technology Transfer Office offers very good conditions for the incubation of a commercial enterprise during the whole start-up phase. Spin-offs find overall support from before until a few years after the foundation.

In May 2014, the Class 5 Photonics GmbH was awarded the 10 000 Euro Start-up Challenge prize organised by OptecNet Deutschland e.V.
